WHAT IS HEALTHY FAMILIES?
Healthy Families is low cost insurance for children up to age 19. It provides health (including prescription), dental and vision coverage to children who do not have insurance and do not qualify for free Medi-Cal (usually because income is too high).
WHO IS ELIGBILE?
Healthy Families is for children 18 years old and younger who live in California. Families can qualify if:
- The family income is within the Federal Income Guidelines. (The guidelines are based on the size of the family and the ages of children in the family.)
- The children do not qualify for no-cost Medi-Cal.
- They have not been covered by insurance from an employer, for at least three months. (There are some exceptions to this rule.)
- The children meet citizenship/immigration rules.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR HEALTHY FAMILIES?
There are 3 ways to apply. To apply you can:

WHAT DOES HEALTHY FAMILIES COVER?
Healthy Families pays for health, dental and vision services. Services covered include hospital care when it is medically necessary, care from doctors, including surgeons, prescription drugs, well child services to prevent disease, family planning (birth control), mental health care, alcohol and drug treatment services, physical, speech and occupational therapy, lab and x-ray services, dental care and vision care.
WHAT DO I PAY?
Healthy Families applicants pay a monthly premium (bill). The premium is between $4 and $9 for each child — up to a maximum amount of $27 a month for all children in the family. Healthy Family members also pay a co-payment (usually $5) for most services. Co-payments are payments for visits to the doctor, for prescription drugs, for emergency services or other services. Some services are free. Free services include immunizations and other preventive care.
